What it is and what it was built for
The Memorymoog is a 6-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer made by Moog Music from 1982 to 1985. It was built to deliver true polyphonic analog synthesis with Moog’s signature filter and oscillator character—after the divide-down Polymoog failed to satisfy players wanting per-voice control.
How it works, in terms a player would use
Each voice has three VCOs with pulse (variable width), saw, and triangle waveforms. Each voice has its own discrete 24 dB/octave Moog ladder filter. Mono mode stacks 1–18 oscillators across voices for unison leads or bass. Chord Memory holds one chord per key. The arpeggiator runs independently. Oscillator 3 modulates at audio rate for FM-like timbres.
What it does better than anything else
It delivers six independent analog voices with dedicated VCOs and discrete ladder filters—the first and only Moog to do so. Its unison mode gives unmatched analog thickness. Its audio-rate VCO-3 modulation creates gritty, unstable FM-like tones no other Moog achieves.
What it does badly
It lacks full patch memory: only chord positions are stored, not sound parameters. It has no velocity or aftertouch. Its build quality is fragile—many units failed within years. The arpeggiator and chord memory are basic and inflexible.
What people made with it
Artists used it for rich pads, aggressive unison basslines, and evolving FM-like textures—especially in early 1980s synth-pop and film scoring where its instability became a feature.
Who should use it, and who should not
Use it if you want hands-on, per-voice analog polyphony and don’t mind maintenance, limited memory, and no MIDI implementation (original units predate MIDI). Avoid it if you rely on recallable patches, expressive controllers, or daily reliability.
