The Moog Source is a monophonic analog synthesizer made by Moog Music from 1981 to 1985. It was built for players who needed reliable preset storage and portability in an era when most Moogs had none.
How it works, in terms a player would use
The Moog Source is controlled by a Z80 microprocessor. It uses a flat-panel membrane keyboard — not mechanical keys — and multihued panel graphics. Players store patches in 16 onboard presets or save them to audio cassette. Two VCOs offer three waveforms and three octaves. The 24 dB/octave VCF has cutoff, resonance, keyboard tracking and envelope amount. Two analog ADSR envelopes drive the VCF and VCA. LFO and sample-and-hold provide modulation. A rudimentary sequencer is built in.
What it does better than anything else
It does patch recall better than any earlier Moog. It is the only Moog with onboard memory and cassette expansion. Its multihued panel graphics and flat-panel interface were unique in Moog’s line — a deliberate break from tradition.
What it does badly
It falls short on tactile response: the membrane keyboard gives no velocity or aftertouch. Its preset system is rigid — no parameter locking, no partial updates. The sequencer is rudimentary. Cassette saving is slow and unreliable. There is no way to edit a patch while playing it.
