What it is and what it was built for
The LA-2A is a hand-wired, vacuum tube-based audio compressor built by Teletronix in 1962. It was designed as a broadcast-leveling amplifier — to even out speech and music for consistent loudness on air.
How it works, in terms a player would use
It has two knobs: Peak Reduction and Gain. One switch toggles the VU meter between gain reduction and output level. The optical gain cell — an electroluminescent panel and cadmium sulfide photoresistor — reacts to incoming signal level. Attack is fixed at 10 ms. Release is program-dependent: 60 ms for 50% recovery, up to 15 seconds for full recovery.
What it does better than anything else
It preserves the impression of performance dynamics under extreme compression better than any other optical compressor. Its program-dependent release adapts to musical phrasing without user intervention.
What it does badly
It cannot handle fast, percussive peaks with precision. Its release is unpredictable. It adds harmonic saturation from the 12AX7 tube, which colours everything. It has no ratio, threshold, attack or release controls — so it gives no fine-grained response to source material.
What people made with it
Engineers used it on vocals and bass in professional recording. Its smooth gain reduction became standard for glueing lead lines without squashing life out of them.
Who should use it, and who should not
Vocalists, bass players, and mix engineers who want transparent-yet-characterful compression with zero setup. Not for drum bus work, mastering, or anyone needing surgical dynamic control.
Is it worth your time
Yes — if you need smooth, hands-off vocal or bass compression that does not call attention to itself. No — if you need fast transients, precise timing control, or clean headroom without tube colouration.
