It is a hand-built electric guitar made by Brian May and his father Harold between August 1963 and October 1964. It was built to play rock music at volume without feedback, using only scrap materials and workshop tools available in a suburban London home.
How it works, in terms a player would use
It has a 24-inch scale length and zero fret, giving tight string tension and even intonation across the neck. Three Burns Tri-Sonic single-coil pickups feed into a simple passive circuit: two epoxy-coated for stability, one uncoated and later modified. The tremolo uses motorbike valve springs and a hardened-steel knife-edge, offering wide pitch shifts but limited fine control.
What it does better than anything else
It sustains longer than most 1960s single-coil guitars due to its dense blockboard-and-oak body construction and rigid aluminium bridge. The zero fret ensures uniform string height and clarity on open strings — critical for May’s layered harmonics and layered overdubs.
What it does badly
It lacks consistent output balance between pickups. The uncoated middle pickup is microphonic. The aluminium bridge transmits handling noise. The tremolo system binds under heavy use and cannot hold pitch reliably after extended bends.
What people made with it
Brian May used it to record Queen’s entire catalogue up to the early 1980s, including layered guitar harmonies, orchestral textures, and live stadium tones that defined their sound.

Only builders, historians, or players committed to replicating May’s exact physical workflow should use it. Anyone needing reliability, serviceability, or tonal consistency should avoid it.
Is it worth your time
It is not worth your time unless you are building or studying hand-built instruments as functional documents of constraint-driven design. It offers no modern convenience, no serviceable parts, and no reproducible signal path.
