The 1176 Peak Limiter is an audio compressor introduced by UREI in 1968. It was built to replace vacuum tube limiters with faster, more reliable all-solid-state circuitry. It was developed from technology acquired from National Intertel.
How it works, in terms a player would use
It uses a field-effect transistor in feedback configuration for gain reduction. Compression amount is set by the input control. Threshold is fixed but rises with higher ratios. Four ratio buttons select 4:1, 8:1, 12:1 or 20:1. Attack and release are program-dependent — release speeds up after transients, slows after heavy compression. Soft knee applies gentle onset. Stereo linking is supported. Pressing all four ratio buttons at once triggers ‘all-button mode’, increasing harmonic distortion and altering compression behaviour.
What it does better than anything else
It delivers faster, more aggressive peak limiting than any contemporary solid-state unit. Its FET-based feedback path produces immediate, harmonically rich saturation under transient load. The all-button mode creates a unique distortion-compression hybrid unmatched elsewhere.
What it does badly
It offers no user-adjustable attack or release. The threshold is fixed and shifts with ratio selection. It cannot deliver clean, neutral gain reduction. Its program-dependent timing hides signal behaviour from the operator. It gives no visual feedback on gain reduction amount.
What people made with it
Engineers used it on vocals, drums and bass to add punch, glue and grit. Its speed and colour made it central to studio workflows where aggression and presence mattered more than transparency.
