Eurorack is a modular synthesizer format introduced in 1995 by Doepfer Musikelektronik. It was built for expandable, hands-on analog and digital synthesis using interchangeable hardware.
How it works, in terms a player would use
Eurorack modules plug into a 3U-high case. They connect with 3.5 mm mono jack cables. Power flows across a shared +12V / 0V / −12V bus. Signals patch freely between VCOs, filters, sequencers and utilities.
What it does better than anything else
It enables deeper signal routing than any other modular format. Its compact size, universal jacks and open electrical spec let modules from different makers occupy the same case and talk to each other without adapters.
What it does badly
It offers no built-in sequencing, no keyboard, no audio interface, no power management beyond the bus, and no standardised user interface. Patching is manual. Organisation is physical. Nothing is automated.
What people made with it
Musicians and designers built entire studios around Eurorack: custom sequencers, generative systems, hybrid MIDI-CV rigs, and bespoke performance instruments — all using modules from multiple manufacturers.
Who should use it, and who should not
Use it if you value tactile control, signal-path experimentation, and long-term system building. Avoid it if you rely on presets, portability, or plug-and-play integration.
