What it is and what it was built for

The Wasp is a desktop-format, digitally oscillated monosynth launched in 1978 by Electronic Dream Plant. It was built for affordability and portability, not studio precision or stage endurance.

How it works, in terms a player would use

It uses flat conductive copper plates under a silk-screened vinyl sticker instead of mechanical keys. Pressing triggers notes via capacitance. Sweat can trigger notes autonomously. It connects to other Wasps via a proprietary multi-unit interconnection system. Sound comes from a tiny internal speaker, or can be sent externally.

What it does better than anything else

It delivers an unmistakable lo-fi digital monosynth tone shaped by its tiny speaker and copper-plate interface. Its black-and-yellow colour scheme makes it visually immediate. Its early digital oscillation gives it a brittle, unstable timbre few instruments replicate.

What it does badly

It is difficult to use live. The copper-plate keyboard misfires when damp. It has no velocity or aftertouch. Its interconnection system is obsolete and non-MIDI. Its internal speaker limits dynamic range and fidelity.

David A. Stewart of Eurythmics recorded it by miking its internal speaker. Gerald Casale of Devo used it live—despite it playing itself when sweaty.
