Bombardier M5000

The Bombardier M5000 is not an audio instrument — it is a tram.

The Bombardier M5000 is a light rail vehicle. TC Electronic is an audio equipment company. They have no relationship. The M5000 uses pre-recorded WAV files for warnings — but offers no user-accessible audio controls, no synthesis, no sampling, no modulation, no inputs or outputs. It is not an instrument. It is not software. It is not part of TC Electronic’s product line. It belongs in transport policy, not in an audio brief.

    Not an instrument

The M5000 is a light rail vehicle — not an audio device.

  2. 2:26
    Fixed audio, no interface

Its warning sounds are fixed WAV files, not playable or editable by users.

  3. 3:59
    Built for service, not sound

It replaced older trams solely for operational reliability, not sonic capability.

  4. 5:37
    No connection to TC Electronic

TC Electronic had no involvement with the M5000 — the two share no technical, commercial or design link.

Worth your time?

No. The brief is enough.

The written brief1 min read

What it is and what it was built for

The Bombardier M5000 is a high-floor, articulated, bi-directional light rail tram built for the Manchester Metrolink system.

How it works, in terms a player would use

The M5000 uses WAV files for warning sounds — street whistle and segregated horn — played from a speaker under the cab. It relies on wheel rotation to trigger passenger information displays. It operates singly or coupled, with no driver cabs at both ends needing manual switching.

What it does better than anything else

It does nothing better than anything else as an audio instrument because it is not one.

What it does badly

It does nothing badly as an audio instrument because it is not one.

What people made with it

No one made audio work with the M5000. It was not used as a sound source, instrument, or audio tool.

Who should use it, and who should not

Transport operators should use it. Audio professionals, musicians, and sound designers should not — it has no audio controls, no signal path, no inputs or outputs, and no role in sound creation or processing.

Is it worth your time

It is not worth your time if you are looking for an audio instrument. It is not an audio instrument.

Korg Poly-800KorgThe Korg Poly-800 is an 8-voice analog synthesizer released by Korg in 1983. It was the first fully programmable polyphonic synthesizer that sold for less than $1,000. It was designed for portability, featuring battery power and a lightweight design that allowed the user to play with it strapped around their neck. It utilised digitally controlled oscillators (DCOs), and was a paraphonic synth with a single filter shared between its eight voices. Each DCO offers sawtooth and square waveforms, which are mixed together with a white noise generator before being sent to a voltage-controlled filter (VCF). The Poly-800 features 2 polyphony modes: Whole mode offers 8-voice polyphony with one DCO per voice, while Double mode places the DCOs in pairs for a richer sound, albeit at the expense of reducing polyphony to four voices. The VCF is shared across all voices, which means the Poly-800 is technically a paraphonic synth, instead of a polyphonic synth. The filter can be set to either single or multiple trigger modes; in single mode, the envelope is triggered by the first key press and won't re-trigger until all keys are released. Multi mode allows each key press to trigger the filter envelope independently.

ARP 2600ARPThe ARP 2600 is a foundational analog synthesizer designed for education. Its semimodular architecture, front-panel signal graphics, and duophonic voice count reflect its classroom purpose—not stage use. Its original filter was replaced after a patent dispute. It teaches synthesis more directly than any contemporaneous instrument, but offers no polyphony, no presets, and unstable tuning.

Epiphone CasinoEpiphoneA true hollow-body electric guitar built for resonance, not resistance. Lightweight. Loud unplugged. Feedback-prone. P-90-driven. 16th-fret neck joint. Used by The Beatles and generations of players who value immediacy over isolation.

Rickenbacker 4001RickenbackerThe Rickenbacker 4001 is a 1961–1986 electric bass built as a deluxe two-pickup successor to the 4000. Its neck-through construction, toaster top pickup, three-way selector, and later Hi-Gain pickups and Ric-O-Sound output give it a bright, articulate, sustaining tone—but limit low-end depth, repairability, and ergonomic flexibility.

The MC-303 isn’t a synth — it’s a locked box of dance presets that forces you to work within its limits.
