The ADAT is a digital multitrack recorder built for home and project studios. It was designed to replace analogue 8-track machines with CD-resolution audio, using off-the-shelf S-VHS tape as its storage medium.
How it works, in terms a player would use
It records eight tracks of 16-bit digital audio onto standard S-VHS videocassette tape. Locate points store sample-exact positions on tape for instant navigation. Auto play and auto record punch in or out at those points without manual timing. Up to 16 units sync together via optical cable for 128-track recording with sample-accurate timing.
What it does better than anything else
It delivers sample-accurate multi-machine sync at a price that was a fraction of competing digital recorders in the early 1990s. It turns cheap S-VHS cassettes into reliable 16-bit multitrack media—something no other consumer-grade device did at launch.
What it does badly
It offers no track naming, no waveform display, no undo, no non-destructive editing. Tape wear degrades fidelity over time. Rewinding and fast-forwarding are slow and imprecise. There is no built-in monitoring path for latency-free overdubbing.
What people made with it
People built full albums on stacked ADATs—recording drums, bass, guitars, and vocals across synced machines. Bands used locate points to rebuild arrangements from tape, not files. Engineers treated tape dropouts and head clogs as part of the process, not failures.
