The Ensoniq ASR-10 is a sampling keyboard built for live performance and self-contained song creation. It is the third-generation EPS-series sampler, released in 1992. It runs without a computer. It combines sampling, 31-voice synthesis, 16-track sequencing, and 62 effects in one unit.
How it works, in terms a player would use
It loads samples into 2MB–16MB of RAM. It records at 16-bit, either 29.7619 kHz or 44.1 kHz. It layers up to eight samples per instrument. It modulates them with three envelopes (pitch, filter, amplitude), two filters in series, one LFO, and 15 modulation sources — including velocity, polyphonic aftertouch, footpedals, and two patch-select buttons. It sequences with a 16-track, 96 PPQN internal sequencer. It applies effects live — up to 62, including vocoder and distortion — and resamples with them. It saves to proprietary 3.5-inch floppy disks holding 1640K, or to SCSI hard drives that support the DISK FORMAT command.
What it does better than anything else
It loads samples while playing — a rare live-performance advantage in the mid-1990s. It integrates sequencing, synthesis, effects, and sampling in one unit without external gear. Its patch-select buttons let players switch four pre-programmed layer combinations instantly during performance. Its effects engine — later sold standalone as the DP/4 — processes external signals live and allows resampling with effects applied.
What it does badly
It fails with many SCSI drives — especially Iomega ZIP 100MB units — unless specially flashed or running the latest OS. Its proprietary floppy format blocks direct DOS access. Its 31-voice architecture hits limits when stacking eight-layer instruments across multiple tracks. Its Sigma-Delta oversampling does not compensate for the fixed 29.7619/44.1 kHz sampling ceiling.
What people made with it
Producers used it to build full songs — sampling, sequencing, processing, and mixing internally. Its load-while-playing ability and live sequence jumping enabled stage-ready arrangements. Its hard-disk recording turned it into an early two-track digital recorder, capturing both audio inputs and its own sequenced output.
