A 61-key, velocity-sensitive, eight-voice digital music workstation built for composers who needed sequencing, multitimbrality, and subtractive-style synthesis in one box. It was Ensoniq’s first sample-based synthesizer, extending the Mirage’s sampling approach into a synth architecture.
How it works, in terms a player would use
It uses true digital oscillators from a custom wavetable chip. Each voice has three oscillators. Signal passes through analog resonant low-pass filters and an analog amplifier. You edit patches with direct-access controls, not menus. The sequencer runs eight internal or external MIDI tracks plus one independent sound — nine voices total, though polyphony is limited to eight.
What it does better than anything else
It integrates an 8-track MIDI sequencer with 2,400-note capacity — expandable — into a fully multitimbral synthesizer before most rivals offered either feature together. It delivers analog-filtered digital wavetables with immediate control, no menu diving.
What it does badly
Early units fail due to under-developed power-supply units. It cannot play nine voices simultaneously in performance mode — only in sequencer tracking. Patch storage is shallow: 40 internal, 80 more via cartridge. No velocity layers or sample editing.
