How it works, in terms a player would use
The SQ-80 uses cross wave synthesis with 43 additional waveforms — including five drumkits — and a floppy disk drive for patch and sequence storage. It offers MIDI in, out, and thru. Its Polypressure Keyboard delivers channel pressure, polyphonic pressure (aftertouch), and programmable velocity. The 2nd Release feature simulates reverb-like effects. Its OS was later back-ported to the ESQ-1 as Version 3.5.
What it does better than anything else
It delivers polyphonic aftertouch with zero mechanical wear — a rarity in 1987–89 synths. Its Polypressure Keyboard is immune to contact problems that plagued the ESQ-1 and Mirage. Its cross wave synthesis gives immediate, evolving timbres from waveform interpolation — faster to shape than raw FM or subtractive layering.
What it does badly
It cannot load or edit samples. It has no audio inputs. Its 2nd Release is a crude reverb simulation, not true reverb. Its sequencer, though enhanced over the ESQ-1, lacks real-time editing per step and modern navigation.

The Dixie Dregs used it on the limited-edition promotional CD Off the Record. Its cross wave synthesis and sequencer supported polished, layered instrumental productions typical of late-80s progressive and studio pop contexts.
