How it works, in terms a player would use
It records mono audio through a single input. It plays back 16-bit samples at seven fixed rates from 11.2 kHz to 44.6 kHz. Stereo output is achieved via panning and internal effects. You load samples into RAM, edit them with basic truncation and looping, then assign them across the keyboard.
What it does better than anything else
It delivers punchy, characterful 16-bit playback with zero latency from key press to sound—thanks to the ES5505 OTIS chip. Its mono input + stereo panning + 13 onboard effects creates a distinct spatial signature for drums and one-shots that cuts through dense mixes.
What it does badly
It cannot record in stereo. It has no built-in microphone. It offers no sample rate conversion on import—samples must be pre-converted. Loop editing is crude: no crossfades, no visual waveform scrubbing, no pitch-synchronous looping.

Producers used it for chopped breakbeats, vocal stabs, and bass hits in early 90s East Coast hip-hop and New Jack Swing. Its Turbo variants—with 2 MB flash and SCSI—enabled faster sample loading and external storage for session work.
