A performance-focused sampling keyboard built for live use and studio sketching. It replaced the Mirage in 1988 and was manufactured until 1991 in Malvern, Pennsylvania.
How it works, in terms a player would use
It loads samples from double-sided, double-density 3.5” floppy disks formatted to 800k. Two processors handle sound generation and disk I/O separately. You can play up to eight instruments while loading another eight. MIDI connects it to other gear or a computer.
What it does better than anything else
It enables true load-while-play better than any contemporary sampler—no pause, no buffer stutter, no stop-start workflow. That separation of sound engine and disk I/O was unique in 1988.
What it does badly
Its polypressure keyboard suffers mechanical issues. The 13-bit resolution limits dynamic range and introduces audible grain. Disk loading is slow and fragile. There is no built-in editing beyond basic trimming and looping.
What people made with it
Early hip-hop producers, bedroom composers, and touring keyboardists used it for quick sample capture, layered pads, and gritty drum hits—especially where affordability and immediacy mattered more than fidelity.
Who should use it, and who should not
Hardware collectors who value functional vintage interfaces. Experimental musicians who want 13-bit texture and disk-based unpredictability. Not for gigging musicians needing reliability or producers needing precision editing.
