What it is and what it was built for
Final Scratch is a vinyl emulation system built for club and studio DJs who wanted digital libraries with turntable control. It was not built for recording, mixing, or live synthesis — only playback and scratching.
How it works, in terms a player would use
You play timecoded vinyl on a standard turntable. The stylus reads position, direction, and speed from the groove. That signal travels via ScratchAmp — FireWire or USB — to software. The software maps and plays back any digital audio file in sync with your hand movements.
What it does better than anything else
It lets DJs manipulate unaltered WAV or AIFF files with the muscle memory of vinyl — pitch faders, torque response, and manual cueing — without burning files to disc.
What it does badly
It does not tolerate slip-cueing or rapid backspins reliably. The timecode signal degrades with worn needles or dirty records. It gives no tactile feedback from the digital file itself — only from the vinyl’s surface.
What people made with it
DJs used it to perform digital sets with vinyl technique: beatmatching MP3s, scratching samples, and looping tracks using timecode records — notably in early 2000s techno and minimal scenes.
Who should use it, and who should not
Use it only if you have original ScratchAmp hardware, Final Scratch 2 or Open software, and timecoded vinyl. Do not use it if you rely on modern DAWs, low-latency monitoring, or plug-in effects during performance.
Is it worth your time
It is worth your time only if you need vinyl-style control over digital files and already own compatible hardware and software. It adds latency, requires calibration, and locks you into a proprietary timecode system.
