The Roland MC-4 Microcomposer is a 1981 microprocessor-based CV/Gate sequencer built to control multiple analog synths with mathematical precision. It was built for composers who needed repeatability, interlocking parts, and system-wide sync before MIDI existed.
How it works, in terms a player would use
You enter notes as numbers: Middle C is 24, higher notes go up, lower down. You set step time for note spacing and gate time for note length. You program via numeric keypad or live CV/Gate keyboard input. Four 3.5mm outputs — CV-1, CV-2, Gate, MPX — each control one synth. Memory is volatile: sequences vanish without cassette backup.
What it does better than anything else
It delivers four independent CV/Gate channels with multiplexed control — more than any contemporary sequencer. Syncing two MC-4s gives eight channels, unmatched in 1981. Its microprocessor-based step sequencing enables complex, repeatable polyphonic patterns across modular or semi-modular systems.
What it does badly
It offers no visual feedback for pitch or timing. It cannot store sequences without external cassette. It has no real-time overdub or editing after entry. It gives no audio or tactile confirmation of input. Its numeric interface forces abstraction over musical intuition.
