A keyboard-based electro-mechanical tape sampler built in Birmingham, England, in 1963. Designed to replay analogue tape recordings of real instruments — not to synthesise or process sound.
How it works, in terms a player would use
Press a key. A tape is pushed against a playback head. The capstan draws it across the head while the key stays down. Release the key. A spring retracts the tape to its start. Press harder for aftertouch — increased head contact pressure changes the sound.
What it does better than anything else
It delivers pre-recorded acoustic textures — strings, choirs, flutes — with physical presence no digital sampler replicates. The wow, flutter and amplitude variation are inseparable from the tone. Each note carries the weight of its mechanism.
What it does badly
It cannot play the same note twice with identical pitch or volume. Tape wear, spring fatigue and mechanical inconsistency make reliability impossible. It does not sustain notes beyond tape length. It cannot layer sounds or change timbre mid-note.

People made orchestral textures in rock music, eerie atmospheres in progressive and psychedelic recordings, and uncanny vocal pads before digital sampling existed.
