The Roland MKS-80 is an 8-voice, rack-mount, fully analog subtractive synthesizer made from 1984 to 1987. It was built to bring Jupiter-6 and Jupiter-8 voice architecture into studio and stage setups without a keyboard.
How it works, in terms a player would use
It runs eight fully analog voices, each with two Curtis CEM3340 VCOs. It uses voltage-controlled oscillators—not digitally-controlled ones—so pitch drift and warmth are built in. The signal path includes a high-pass filter, two VCAs (the second with a low boost circuit), and a filter updated in the February 1985 Rev 5 revision.
What it does better than anything else
It delivers VCO-based 8-voice analog polyphony in a rack format—something no other MKS-series unit does. Its Rev 5 filter shares lineage with the JX-8P and MKS-70, offering a smoother, more stable character than earlier revisions.
What it does badly
It offers no keyboard, no sequencer, no effects, and no MIDI implementation beyond basic note-on/off and CCs. Its front-panel editing is minimal: most sound design requires SysEx dumps or third-party editors.
