The Roland JX-10 is a 12-voice analog keyboard synthesizer introduced in 1986. It was built to combine two JX-8P architectures into one instrument for expanded polyphony, layering, and split-keyboard performance.
How it works, in terms a player would use
It runs two independent 6-voice Tone Modules (A-Upper and B-Lower) that can be combined into a single 12-voice synth or split for layering and keyboard zones. Patch memory holds 64 slots, each configurable as either one 12-voice tone or two 6-voice tones. Programming is done via front-panel Alpha-Dial or external editors like the PG-800 or KiwiTechnics Patch Editor. Original firmware lacks SysEx for Tone or Patch data; updated firmware restores it.
What it does better than anything else
It delivers true dual-Tone operation—simultaneous layering or splitting—with full voice independence per module, more flexibly than the JX-8P or most contemporaries. Its 76-note velocity-sensitive keyboard with aftertouch gives physical control rare in mid-80s Roland synths.
What it does badly
Its original MIDI implementation cannot send or receive Tone or Patch data via SysEx. Pulse-width modulation was omitted from the final design despite available hardware resources. The chorus and amplifier sections differ from the JX-8P in ways that limit tonal consistency with that lineage.
What people made with it
Producers used its layered pads and basses in 1980s pop, film scores, and early electronic music—especially where thick, chorused analog textures were needed across wide keyboard ranges.
Who should use it, and who should not
Players who want hands-on analog layering, have access to firmware upgrades, and value hardware modifiability should use it. Those needing plug-and-play SysEx, factory PWM, or lightweight portability should not.

Yes—if you need flexible analog layering and splitting in a single unit, and are willing to upgrade firmware and possibly hardware. No—if you rely on out-of-the-box MIDI patch management or demand modern modulation depth without modification.
