What it is and what it was built for

A 6-voice subtractive synthesizer introduced by Roland in January 1983. Built as a less expensive alternative to the Jupiter-8, but with deliberate design choices — like bitimbral split and multi-waveform stacking — that prioritised hands-on polyphonic flexibility over luxury features.

How it works, in terms a player would use

It has 12 analog oscillators — two per voice — and lets you assign them across the keyboard in Split 4/2 or 2/4 mode, or use all six voices together in Whole Mode. You select waveforms per oscillator bank: sawtooth, triangle, variable width pulse, square, or noise — and you can stack any or all of them at once. Oscillator sync and cross modulation are on board. Unison Mode fires all 12 oscillators from one key.

What it does better than anything else

It layers waveforms per oscillator bank more freely than the Jupiter-8 — a feature the JP-8 lacks entirely. It offers bitimbral split control with analog oscillators at a lower price point than the JP-8, and was among the first synths with MIDI.

What it does badly

It cannot layer two independent timbres across the full keyboard — only split them. Voice allocation is rigid: 4+2 or 2+4, never 3+3 or flexible routing. No aftertouch, no velocity layers, no patch memory backup beyond internal RAM.
