How it works, in terms a player would use
It runs on clockwork or batteries. It records to 1/4-inch tape. It uses physical sync leads or crystal-controlled timecode to lock to a camera. Level is set with pots, limiters engage automatically, equalisers are preset or switchable. Tape transport is driven by one motor (early models) or three (IS model).
What it does better than anything else
It delivers unmatched mechanical stability for handheld or mobile recording in extreme conditions. Its transport tolerates shock, dust, and temperature swings better than any contemporary reel-to-reel. Its signal path preserves transient fidelity across decades of tape reuse. Its physical controls give immediate tactile response without menu diving.
What it does badly
It cannot record more than two tracks natively. It offers no non-linear editing. Its tape-based workflow breaks continuity in long takes without manual intervention. It lacks built-in timecode generation before 1984. It has no digital storage, network transfer, or software integration.
