What it is and what it was built for
Plaits is a 12HP Eurorack module introduced in 2018. It was built to replace Braids as Mutable Instruments’ flagship digital oscillator — not as an emulation tool, but as a focused, performative DSP instrument with zero shared hardware or software with its predecessor.
How it works, in terms a player would use
Plaits is a 12HP Eurorack module with two banks of eight synthesis models — one pitched, one noisy and percussive. Model selection cycles via buttons or CV, gated by triggers when the trigger input is patched. The coarse frequency knob covers 8 octaves by default but can be narrowed to 14 semitones. TIMBRE, MORPH, and HARMONICS are model-specific tone controls: TIMBRE sweeps spectral density, MORPH explores lateral timbral shifts, HARMONICS adjusts frequency spread or constituent balance. Trigger input excites physical models, strikes the internal low-pass gate (unless LEVEL CV is patched), triggers the envelope generator, and samples-and-holds MODEL CV.
What it does better than anything else
It delivers more distinct, musically functional synthesis models per HP than any other Eurorack module of its era. Its integration of LPG, multi-role trigger, and model-specific controls gives immediate articulation — no external envelope or mixer needed to start playing noise, strings, bass, or bells.
What it does badly
It does not support polyphony beyond three voices in inharmonic string mode. It offers no visual feedback for model state or parameter position. Its trigger-gated model switching prevents real-time browsing when the trigger input is patched. It provides no manual save/load for presets or model configurations.

People made percussion layers, evolving textures, melodic leads, and generative drones with it — using its model-switching as a rhythmic device, its LPG as a self-contained voice, and its trigger functions to chain physical-model excitations without external timing sources.
Who should use it, and who should not
Use it if you work in live modular performance, need rapid timbral contrast, or want a single module that spans pitched synthesis and percussive sound design. Do not use it if you rely on stable tuning across patches, require more than three simultaneous inharmonic string voices, or need direct access to oscillator waveforms or filter slopes.
