The Roland VP-330 is a paraphonic ten-band vocoder and string machine built in 1979. It was built for live performers needing portable, reliable vocal-texture generation and string pads without tape mechanisms or heavy servicing.
How it works, in terms a player would use
It has a 37-key keyboard that triggers four choir sounds or string tones. Each choir sound uses four of seven shared bandpass filters. The vocoder analyses incoming audio through ten bands and imposes that spectral shape onto the internal string/choir oscillator bank. A BBD-based ensemble effect thickens strings, choirs, and vocoder output — switchable per section.
What it does better than anything else
It delivers a uniquely synthetic, glassy, slightly nasal choir tone — unlike any Mellotron tape or later digital choir — and blends it in real time with vocoding and string pads using a single signal path. No other device from 1979 does all three in one chassis.
What it does badly
It cannot play more than one choir sound at once. Its paraphonic architecture forces all notes to share the same filter pool and envelope. The choir sounds lack dynamic response or articulation beyond on/off triggering. It has no memory, no MIDI, no patch storage, and no external sync.
What people made with it
Touring musicians used it to replace Mellotrons on stage. Its choir and vocoder textures appear in late-1970s and early-1980s synth-pop, film scores, and experimental recordings where artificial vocal timbre and lightweight string layers were prioritised over realism.

Synth players who value hands-on, immediate vocal-string layering and accept paraphonic limits. Not for producers needing recallable patches, velocity sensitivity, or multi-timbral sequencing.
