Braids is a voltage-controlled digital sound source for Eurorack. It occupies 16 HP. It was built to deliver 45 discrete synthesis models from a single, compact interface.
How it works, in terms a player would use
Braids gives you two knobs—Timbre and Color—to shape each of 45 synthesis models. Timbre most often changes brightness. Most models route oscillators through crossfaders, modulators, filters, or delay lines. You patch voltage sources into its CV inputs to move those parameters in real time.
What it does better than anything else
It packs more distinct synthesis behaviours into 16 HP than any other Eurorack module: FM, wavetable, waveguide, and analog emulation—all switchable with one knob and immediate response.
What it does badly
It does not let you edit individual oscillator waveforms, adjust filter slopes, or tune partials. It offers no built-in envelope or LFO. Its digital output has no analogue character unless processed externally.
What people made with it
People used Braids as the sole sound source in generative patches, as a chaotic melodic engine in live sets, and as a textural layer in studio compositions—often chaining its outputs through external filters and delays to compensate for its lack of internal modulation depth.
Who should use it, and who should not
