The Drumtraks is Sequential’s first drum machine and first sample-based product. Released in 1984, it was built to deliver programmable, ROM-based drum sounds with early MIDI integration — for studio and live use alongside emerging digital sequencers and legacy analogue gear.
How it works, in terms a player would use
It loads drum sounds from swappable ROM chips. You open the front panel to change them. It accepts LinnDrum ROM chips. Its built-in buttons are not velocity-sensitive, but it responds to velocity via MIDI input from an external controller. It syncs tempo with MIDI gear and older non-MIDI devices using configurable clock I/O.
What it does better than anything else
It was one of the first drum machines to feature MIDI control — ahead of most competitors in 1984. Its clock I/O lets it sync with both MIDI and legacy pre-MIDI gear. ROM-swappable sounds gave users rare hardware-level sound customisation without software or sampling.
What it does badly
The built-in trigger buttons are not touch-sensitive. There is no internal sound editing. ROM swapping requires physical access and tools. It offers no onboard sequencing beyond basic pattern playback — no step-time or real-time recording, no parameter automation, no pattern chaining.

Is it worth your time
It is worth your time if you want hands-on, hardware-based sample swapping and early MIDI sync flexibility in a compact unit. It is not worth your time if you need internal velocity sensitivity, real-time sound editing, or polyphonic or melodic synthesis.
