What it is and what it was built for
It is an overdrive pedal introduced in 1994. Bill Finnegan built it to emulate high-volume amplifier distortion—not replace it.
How it works, in terms a player would use
It doubles the input voltage from nine to eighteen volts. Then it splits the signal into three paths. One path runs the signal through a JFET-based TL072 op amp and two 1N34A diodes. Those diodes clip hard. The other two paths handle clean blending and tone shaping.
What it does better than anything else
It adds sustain and volume to an already-overdriven amp while preserving pick attack and string detail better than most pedals built for that role.
What it does badly
It does badly as a sole source of distortion with a clean amp. It cannot deliver low-gain transparency or high-gain saturation without an amp’s own overdrive underneath.

Players used it to push tube amps further while keeping clarity, dynamics, and midrange presence intact.
Who should use it, and who should not
Guitarists who run tube amps loud and want a pedal that behaves like a second gain stage should use it. Players who rely on pedalboard-only distortion, low-wattage amps, or solid-state rigs should not.
Is it worth your time
Yes—if you need an overdrive that pushes an already-cranked amp without flattening its character. No—if you want standalone distortion, transparency at low gain, or flexibility across clean-to-fuzz ranges.
