The Elektron Octatrack DPS-1 is a digital electronic music instrument built for live sampling, step-sequenced playback, and real-time audio manipulation. It was made by Elektron Music Machines after the Machinedrum UW.
How it works, in terms a player would use
The user triggers sample playback by pressing buttons across four pages of 16 time-point buttons. An LED lights to show the current step. Samples load from CompactFlash or live-recorded audio via four analog inputs. Each of eight audio tracks routes to stereo outputs or headphones. Eight MIDI tracks send data from the same sequencer logic.
What it does better than anything else
It integrates sampling, step sequencing, effects, and MIDI sequencing into one tightly coupled hardware interface where every parameter can be automated per step. Nothing else forces that level of real-time, tactile, track-by-track sample mangling without a computer.
What it does badly
It cannot edit samples non-destructively. It offers no built-in file browser or waveform scrubbing. There is no undo. Sample manipulation happens in RAM only, and editing requires re-triggering or re-sequencing—not timeline-based adjustment.

Who should use it, and who should not
A producer who works with loops, field recordings, or chopped vocal phrases—and who wants physical control over every playback parameter, per step, per track—should use it. Anyone who needs flexible routing, non-linear editing, or DAW-style comping should not.
