The Oberheim OB-8 is an eight-voice polyphonic subtractive analog synthesizer released in 1983. It was built for studio and stage musicians who needed programmable, multi-timbral analog tones within Oberheim’s integrated ‘The System’.

It uses a dual-page front panel: Page 1 for basic sound shaping, Page 2 for deeper modulation routing, filter modes, and bi-timbral layering. Players toggle between pages to access twice as many programming options as earlier OB synths. The 61-note keyboard is processor-controlled and responds to MIDI. Patch memory holds 120 single-timbral sounds and 24 bi-timbral ones. It runs on a Z80 CPU.
What it does better than anything else
It delivers more immediate, tactile programmability than any prior OB synth—thanks to Page 2—while retaining the warmth and stability of Curtis-filtered subtractive synthesis across eight voices. Its integration with the DSX sequencer and DMX drum machine via Oberheim’s Serial Buss was unmatched in 1983.
What it does badly
It offers no built-in effects. Its cassette storage is slow and fragile. The Z80 CPU limits patch recall speed and interface responsiveness. Bi-timbral mode halves voice count to four per layer, restricting dense arrangements.

Musicians used it to build layered pads, split bass-and-lead textures, and sync sequences with the DSX and drum patterns from the DMX—all without MIDI cables, using Oberheim’s proprietary Serial Buss.
