A rack-mounted FM synthesizer released in 1987. Built as a low-cost alternative to other FM synths. Designed for studio integration, not live performance.
How it works, in terms a player would use
It uses a single YM2414B (OPZ) FM chip and a 63B03 CPU to allocate voices and generate auxiliary LFOs. It has no keyboard, no pitch envelope generator, and no velocity or pressure sensing. It loads patches from DX21/DX27/DX100 and nearly matches the DX11 — but without the DX11’s pitch EG or keyboard.
What it does better than anything else
It was the first FM synth to offer oscillator waveforms beyond sine waves. That gives it timbres unavailable on the DX7, DX9, or earlier Yamaha FM synths — especially in basses, plucks, and metallic leads.
What it does badly
It omits a pitch envelope generator. It cannot generate more than four operators per voice. Its CPU handles voice allocation and LFOs in parallel with MIDI and UI, limiting responsiveness and feature depth.
What people made with it
Producers used its non-sine waveforms to create distinctive basslines, sharp digital leads, and percussive textures — especially in UK acid house and early rave, where its affordability and character made it ubiquitous in budget studios.
