What it is and what it was built for

A floppy disk–based keyboard workstation built for sampling, recording, and playback. Designed as a lower-cost alternative to the Fairlight CMI after E-mu’s founders saw both the Fairlight and Linn LM-1 at the 1980 AES Convention.

How it works, in terms a player would use

It loads samples from a 5¼” floppy disk. You record a sound, save it to disk, then play it back across the keyboard. The keyboard splits into two zones — one sample on the left, one on the right — so playing the same sound across the full range means loading it twice. It has no VCA envelope generator. You get two, four, or eight voices depending on the model.

What it does better than anything else

It made sampling affordable and portable in 1981. At £7,900, it undercut the Fairlight CMI by more than £22,000. It turned floppy disks into a shared sample library — a physical, tradeable format for sonic exchange.

What it does badly

It cannot shape volume over time: no VCA envelope means no attack, decay, sustain or release. It supports only one loop per sample. Playing a single sound across the full keyboard forces duplication across split zones. Its eight-bit resolution limits dynamic range and fidelity.

What people made with it

Musicians used it to replace acoustic instruments, layer textures, and build early digital arrangements — but only with what fit on a 5¼” floppy and could survive an eight-bit conversion.

Its legacy is linguistic and architectural: it gave sampling a name, and built the first workstation where sound, sequence, and synth shared one chassis.

Released in 1980, it replaced preset patterns with human-performed, non-degrading sounds. Its quantization enforced perfect sixteenth-note timing. Its timestretching was crude but sonically distinctive—used on 'Higher State of Consciousness' and 'RipGroove'. It displaced the S900 as the studio standard.
