What it is and what it was built for

A sampling drum machine built for beatmakers who needed to capture drums and percussion on the fly. Designed in 1984 and announced in 1985, it sits between the Drumulator and SP-1200 in E-mu’s line. Its purpose was direct, hands-on sampling — no menus, no disk drives, no computer interface.

How it works, in terms a player would use

It plays 24 preset ROM drum sounds or user samples via 12 plastic top-panel buttons. Pressing a button triggers a sound. Dynamics come from piezo sensors detecting impact force. Sampling is manual and immediate: record directly into one of twelve memory slots. The 12-bit linear format and 26.04kHz sample rate fix the resolution and speed. There is no reconstruction filter — so imaging artefacts sit above the audible band, brightening the output.

What it does better than anything else

It captures punch and transience faster than any sampler before it. The omission of a reconstruction filter gives it a sharp, unfiltered top end that cuts through mixes without EQ. The piezo-dynamic buttons respond to velocity in real time — not via MIDI or lookup tables — making it feel physically connected to the sound.

It cannot loop samples. It has no integrated sequencer. Memory is fixed at 12 seconds total across all 12 slots. Editing is non-existent: no trimming, reversing, or pitch shifting. The plastic buttons wear, and the piezo response degrades with age or heavy use.
