A sampling drum machine built for hip hop producers who needed to chop breaks, sequence beats, and loop samples—all in one unit. Released in August 1987 by E-mu Systems as the successor to the SP-12.
How it works, in terms a player would use
It records samples into volatile RAM from a 3.5” disk. You assign each sample to one of twelve pads. Pitch-shifting is drop-sample: replaying or skipping data points, not interpolating. Channels 1 and 2 pass through dynamic SSM2044 analog lowpass filters. Channels 7 and 8 have no filtering at all. Looping and sequencing happen inside the box.
What it does better than anything else
It delivers raw, saturated 12-bit texture at 26.04 kHz in a single box that sequences, loops, and triggers—without external gear. The SSM2044 filters on channels 1 and 2 move with the envelope, giving punch and decay that cut through dense hip hop mixes.
What it does badly
It cannot hold samples without power. It offers only 2.5 seconds per sound, forcing brutal editing. Its drop-sample pitch-shifting detunes drums unpredictably when transposed. Channels 7 and 8 lack filtering entirely, limiting tonal control.
What people made with it
Producers used it to build the rhythmic backbone of East Coast hip hop in the late 1980s and early 1990s—chopping vinyl breaks, pitching snares, and layering lo-fi kicks with aggressive swing.
Who should use it, and who should not
Producers who prioritise tactile workflow and sonic character over precision. Not for anyone who needs recallable patches, stable tuning across octaves, or more than 10 seconds of total sample time.
Is it worth your time
Yes—if you want the sound of unfiltered 12-bit grit, unpredictable pitch-shift distortion, and hands-on loop editing with zero undo. No—if you need stable tuning, clean filters on all channels, or non-volatile storage.
